The Last Apprentice series is like my go-to audiobook series when I'm not sure what else I want to listen to next but I know the story will be good and the narrator will be good because it's always consistent. It also never has huge cliffhangers so I know I won't feel pressured to listen to the next book like "right now. In book 10, Tom is still trying to prepare to defeat the Fiend. They h 3. They have his head, which has to be separate from his body or the Fiend can come back so Grimalkin has been trying to keep the head away from enemy hands until Tom can locate the third blade that he needs to defeat the Fiend once and for all.

His books mean a lot to me as they are so local and so damn good too. If the film makes a difference then sometime soon we all will go.. His 'County' is even better than Hogwarts 'cos it is 'Warts and all' a truly spectacular reinvention o I can't see how many have read this to rate it..

His 'County' is even better than Hogwarts 'cos it is 'Warts and all' a truly spectacular reinvention of 'local legends' Pendle Wichcraft ,arcane stuff 'pagan rituals and demi-gods et all' and mythology of folklore 'Seventh Sons' and 'reversing mirrors' Then you get the triumvarate of characters that blend and clash and try and join to alleviate the peril and add in the ultimate 'killing machine' Grimalkin, the 'Fiend' and the earthy darkness of our 'County' The pure pace and goryness of this latest will blow your mind.

Joe has really got his mojo now and his trips to suss out where to set the instalments obviously are meticulously done, I envisage Todmorden being like a mecca in the future for 'Spook-ologists' View all 3 comments. Oct 13, Sara rated it it was amazing Shelves: I just started reading again after hybernating for Hell knows how long. Delaney why??? I don't know about Alice, she's always been the best kick-ass in this series, but she's also too selfless and self-sacrificing kind of person.

I hope Tom can do something so Alice doesn't have to be sacrificed. I can't take it if Alice dies, she's my favorite character! I mean, couldn't they pick someone like Skandar Keynes he's my favorite cast for Tom Ward? I'm going to lose my brain if it's going to be like Eragon.

So my system tends to be very much a patchwork of up and down ratings. Now why am I beginning my review with this? Well I actually didn't have a reason I thought it would be a good thing to throw in there and test my readers.

Well I actually didn't have a reason I thought it would be a good thing to throw in there and test my readers No I joke! I put that in there to provide an indication as to how I feel about the entire Spook's Apprentice Series also known as the Wardstone Chronicles.

They're pretty good books, I've enjoyed them overall but I consistently give four stars merely because I do not like them as much as YA fiction like Percy Jackson, Mortal Engines or Ranger's Apprentice. This book features lots of blood, what else can you expect from a book that focuses on the conflict between the Spook and Tom and a vampire god.

And the fact that it's called The Spook's Blood is no giveaway at all Anyway while this is a solid continuation of the series and we are nearing the end at last it's not exactly a ground-breaking entry. At this point things seem to be more or less serving the purpose of trying to bring everything to a conclusion.

It's definitely only worth reading if you've gone through all the previous books. But if you liked them you'll probably like this book too. Dec 20, Maddison rated it it was amazing. The Spook's Blood is a medieval fantasy book.

The reason I read this book is because I had already started the series after being recommended it, and I just loved it, so I've followed the books and looked forward to the new releases for a long time. The main plot is for Tom, the Spook's apprentice, to destroy Siscoi, the old god who the witches are trying to raise.

He does this by persevering with hardship, the long nights and the horror. Tomas Ward, a 15 year old who turns 16, is a Spook's apprent The Spook's Blood is a medieval fantasy book. Tomas Ward, a 15 year old who turns 16, is a Spook's apprentice, and being a Spook's apprentice means not having many friends, having people cross the road when they see you, having people become scared of you, but it's all for a good cause; to fight the denizens of the dark, the demons that cross through.

I like Tom because I feel I can relate to him because I'm only a year younger than him, and I would never be able to do all that he does. I don't like him because he always thinks what other people would think of him before he does anything. I didn't like this book because it was too short! It needed to be longer!

And also because it seemed like the least action-packed book in the series. I loved this book because it was the kind of story I like; dark, creepy, gory and suspenseful. It kept me thinking, and gave me shocks at times. The book was published this year. Overall, this book is definitely recommended, more so to guys than girls, but yeah View all 5 comments. Mar 23, Highness Atharva rated it really liked it. The end obviously, what else? Delaney provides another great supplement to the Wardstone Chronicles, one that will surely hook you and make you realize where the series is going to end.

The plot is absolutely amazing and we come back to Tom's PoV narration after the previous book. This was my first time reading the book so I was excited to read new things. The end was unexpected and very surprising, something reader could have ever thought.

I would really recommend you this book, if you have to finish the series and get satisfaction, this is a book that you should really not skip. It starts with a good recap of the past events along with character introduction and situation and progresses slowly in the beginning.

‎Joseph Delaney on Apple Books

Things really seem to be good and jolly in the beginning, but as you'd expect 'happiness doesn't last forever' is Delaney's Motto, especially regarding the Wardstone series. So, things go bad really soon as soon as we reach the third chapter. Its really saddening after all that Tom has done to see him so devastated after reading Mam's letter and misunderstanding about her feeling.

But that is nothing compared to when he gets the news about the Ritual for the destruction of the Fiend and for that he must kill Alice with his own hands.

The three blades, of which two Tom already has, namely, the Destiny Blade and The Bone Blade are also brought into light. And Alice has grown powerful, more powerful that I could imagine, even powerful than Grimalkin, obviously not in combat but in dark magic.

She is a very useful ally in the book. The book highlights the issue where Tom repeatedly hears Mam's voice inside his head as she guides him, in the beginning as well as the end.

After this, the book can be divided into two parts, 1 Getting into Todmorden, a town at the edge of the County 2 Ascension and Destruction of Siscoi, an old God I would say that the latter part is much more better than the first one.

The first one drags the reader very slowly and is not very attractive but introductions couldn't be given much better. It just adds to the storyline and gives an idea of whats to come. The town is planned well, mostly focusing on the people and the 'Transforming' house which is haunted by the strigoica spirit and its male spirit. This specifies that the book has a heavy Romanan influence with Roman witches, spirits, ghasts and Old Gods that threaten to infiltrated and darken the county, The real thing begins when Grimalkin arrives in the town, then things just get very very exciting that you can't wait to finish the book.

The action and the combat scenes are just enthralling and full of excitement. Another thing I forgot to say, a new ex-apprentice plays a very major role in the first half of the book, namely Judd. He is ever helpful, but the cause of the 'Spooks' fake death.

The Spook's Destiny

The talks with the Fiend, the ascension of the Vampire God, side quests including the retrieval of the boggart, the ritual to awaken Siscoi, the final battle and the gripping end which is just unexpected are the things that I like about the book. Let us speak about the characters.

I no longer traeat the Spook as a major charachter henceforth, he is not much active in action nor does give Tom any 'important' lessons. By my point of view, Tom has already surpassed Old Gregory who has grown weaker and weary. Grimalkin, has become a major character and fights with new motive and spirit, substituting for the Spooks lack. As i mentioned, nothing is more powerful in the book than Alice.

The dark artifices are also brought into limelight. Especially, the grimore 'Doomdryte', would influence the plot of future books surely. And even the three blades are required to carry out the ritual.

Speaking of Tom, he is more mature, responsible, grown, strong and a hunter of the darkness. He does not cower and gets scared of anybody, thanks to his training by the Spook, Grimalkin and Arkwright, he has grown so much and seen things at such a young age.

The book provides a very satisfactory point of view narrative which makes is so engrossing. It really ticks me off about the fact that at least one major must surely die in the end, that will happen at any costs and the darkness keeps rising, the servants of the the Fiend keep rising and substituting those who have been defeated. Even the boggart seems to be back and things at Chipenden are now settled but much more things would be happening in future, things I cannot imagine and would be a surprise for anyone.

The encounter with the Romanian witches, the moroii, the haunted Roman spirits and ghasts both male and female versions , the dark Vampire God are so well crafted that it just leaves you fascinates and wanting more. Paired with gripping storyline, combat, witty and economic dialogues, readers will devour this book.

I would also like to add that the story was unnecessary made more intricate in the first half of the book. It is full of surprises and character traits that have never been explored before i.

The characters have been shaped very well and realistic, both the protagonists and the antagonists, I have almost nothing to say against the book. A real treat and delight to read which inspires us and motivates us to read more. That is the magic of Joseph Delaney. Nice Reading! Mar 22, e. You have to accept that in this world things are constantly changing. Nothing stays the same forever. We have to learn to live with that.

The series follows Tom Ward who is an apprentice to John Gregory. John Gregory is the County's local Spook, who deals with creatures from the dark. In this book, Tom, Mr. Gregory, and Tom's friend Alice a witch are back in the County after traveling to Ireland. The 3 of them had to travel to Ireland as refugees after enemies had invaded the County. The Spook's house had been burned by the enemy soldiers, and Tom and the Spook are working on restocking the Spook's huge library about creatures of the dark.

One day the Spook gets a letter from a Romanian woman named Mistress Fresque. Mistress Fresque says that she has many books in her library about the dark that she is willing to sell to Mr. So, the Spook and Tom travel north to Todmorden, to download the books. It seems like a valid offer, but they soon find out that Mistress Fresque is a demon strigoica and the entire town is inhabited by strigoi male demons and strigoica female demons.

They are from Romania and are vampiric demons who worship the ancient vampire god, Siscoi. The strigoi kidnap the Spook but Tom escapes. They tell Tom that he can only have the Spook back if he brings him the head of the Fiend, who Tom has bound in a pit.

The head is carried by Tom's ally, the witch assassin, Grimalkin. Tom calls on Grimalkin and his friend Alice to help him get the Spook back. Meanwhile, the strigoi and strigoica are trying to bring Siscoi into the world through a portal. The only way that they can stop Siscoi is to kill the host body he is about to inhabit before midnight or all is lost.

Tom and Grimalkin manage to corner Siscoi in his underground lair, and Tom, after a long fight, kills Siscoi. Grimalkin and Alice manage killing off the rest of the strigoi and strigoica to rid Todmorden of their evil, while Tom goes and rescues the Spook. After their victory Tom tells Alice that she must go into the dark to retrieve a weapon that could help destroy the Fiend permanently, but they don't have much time This book is very well written and I have no idea how the author has kept up such a great story line over what is now 10 books.

The books just keep getting better and more exciting. I recommend this to anyone who like action and adventure and fantasy. This book also has ties to history in it as well. Oct 07, Lex rated it it was amazing Shelves: I'm on my tenth one!!! Soon I'll catch up with Glam. One of the best book in the series.

HP and VA. The Spook's blood proved my hypothesis wrong. Since I, admittedly, have seen JP's question to Glam earlier Yes, it was placed in a spoiler and I still read it , I was really shocked about it.

I started to think that he's dead. I actually didn't think that this series would add Vampires in their list of evil denizens of the dark. It is I'm on my tenth one!!! It is not the 'sparkly vampires' JP always said about Twilight. This vamps here are gross and really monster-like.

Earlier, there's this local show in my country that shows the old legends here. There's this psychic girl saying that this creature, 'aswang', as we called it, was warning them to stay ayaw from its lair or else it'll come to them.

And they also have a drawn picture of it after the people in the neighborhood describe it. These aswang could shapeshift from black ominous cats to large dogs. The picture looks like a werewolf.

Big and scary looking not like the fluffy Jacob of Twilight. I believe in Angels and well, to those kinds of things too. Those legends are not just that. O Back to the review, although Alice annoyed me whenever she said to Tom that she did this and that for him to his face, I'm a bit concerned about what Tom was supposed to do on the Halloween.

I pity Tom for having such HUGE responsibilities even though he's not yet completed in his apprenticeship. It's like the whole world is in his hands and it'll be his fault if he didn't defeat the Fiend. Easy said than done.

Overall, a well deserved 5 stars! The Spook's Blood just proved me wrong in a good way! And since the title is Spook's Blood, I thought it was Mr. Gregory's blood cause he'll be dead. And she doesn't get scared easily.
