Nov 18, Abdulaziz Fagih rated it it was ok Shelves: But why did I give it 2 out of 5? As NLP is just collection methodology from other sciences that been collected together for trade show and the book will clam the invention of excellent idea to people who are clearly using a well know methodology created by other decades ago. Oct 27, Joe rated it liked it. This book was recommended by Neil Strauss. It is more a textbook with what I felt were limited practical examples.

Given that NLP is about modelling excellence I feel the writers could have modelled some more engaging authors in order to explain their subject. I am familiar with NLP and looking for a practical guide to implement it into my life rather than a very dry textbook. I don't think this book would be of much use to a total beginner as I can't see someone finishing the book without any reply This book was recommended by Neil Strauss. I don't think this book would be of much use to a total beginner as I can't see someone finishing the book without any reply benefit to them except at the end when further tapes, books or courses are recommended.

Perhaps I am just used to personal development books that have practical applications that can be implemented immediately while reading the book. This book may work for some but not me. Nov 14, Jessie rated it really liked it. I didn't really know what NLP was about when I first started this.

I was happy to learn that language itself is at the heart of everything we do internally and externally- from our perceptions of ourselves and how our self talk either limits our potential or expands it, to how we speak to others in our lives from relationships to negotiations. The material was really intricate and it will definitely require practice and revisiting in order to fully understand the concepts and techniques, but def I didn't really know what NLP was about when I first started this.

The material was really intricate and it will definitely require practice and revisiting in order to fully understand the concepts and techniques, but definitely worth it! I'm beginning to see a very similar pattern in all of the books that I read, so I think it's a good sign that a lot of the material is becoming redundant.

Dec 27, Brian Ross rated it it was ok.

I was curious to learn more about NLP in regard to how it might relate to coaching. It provides a useful overview and some thought-provoking insights together with high-level descriptions of NLP practices. While the subtitle is "Practical Skills for Understanding and Influencing People", I wouldn't suggest it for general readers, but rather for practitioners who are wondering if it might be useful for them.

The book emphasizes that the way to really learn NLP techniques is experiential, and prov I was curious to learn more about NLP in regard to how it might relate to coaching. The book emphasizes that the way to really learn NLP techniques is experiential, and provides suggestions for following up with training. Feb 17, Leon M rated it liked it Shelves: I'm not so sure whether NLP is just a systemized and scientifically backed approach to psychotherapy or a random collection of tactics that maybe could theoretically and so on improve something I do not know about.

But after all I can't blame a book for the topic it deals with and I have to say that this is all in all quite a good introduction to NLP. There are parts when you say to yourself: Aug 25, Khoa rated it it was amazing. Great book. O'Connor introduced a new concept within the limit of very simple words. It is hard to believe that NLP works but this is indeed true. As a person who had depression and discovered most of the methods before I read this book, I realized that this book is very insightful.

Although I don't agree with some of his belief, such as solving phobias in one day, O'Connor' method are effective if the reader can internalize them. Regardless, a large amount of life experience and a good understa Great book. Regardless, a large amount of life experience and a good understanding of one self is also requied to fully appreciate NLP. Jul 02, Amany A A rated it it was ok. What I really liked about this intro nlp book, is that the author started right in the middle of the subject and branched out from there.

Fast paced book with useful intro techniques for understanding your subconscious and ways to manipulate it for positive results aka life change chosen by you, consciously.

This is an extremely informative book all the way through! I thoroughly enjoyed reading and learning about these techniques. Occasionally, it comes across as a bit dry or intellectual, but once you start applying the information in your life, it becomes very exciting! This will be a life long journey to master NLP, but it's powerful right from the very beginning! Dec 09, Andreas van Rooyen rated it really liked it.

If I were in the field of psychology I would probably rate the book higher. It is a very good primer for the field, as it explains what NLP is in terms even a layman like me can understand.

The book is written in a very readable format and the style makes it a good read. I would recommend the book for anyone who works with people and their emotions and feelings.

This is a must have for anyone looking to completely turn their world upside down. If you want to be happier, make more money, meet that special someone or just get laid more often this book will help you if you apply yourself. This practice is the basis for self help gurus, specifically Anthony Robbins. I am a firm believer that is also the basis for "The Secret" revolution.

Sep 15, Matt Paulk rated it really liked it. It's a little dry, at worst. The true strength of the book lies in the self-awareness it creates. After reading it, you will look more closely at how you live your life.

Jun 26, Frank rated it liked it Shelves: I skimmed through this, that is, I read entire sections but not the whole book, at an Indigo bookstore.

I gave it 3 stars because it explains ideas well, but it does not give specific methods by which you can apply those ideas in your daily life. NLP, a field worth reading, studying and applying. Basically a textbook to NLP. All the basics are covered, but pretty dull at times.

Books by Joseph O'Connor ...

Its written in an nice and interesting way, but sometimes like trying to "sell" the NLP seminars. NLP as a whole is just a fancy way of applying some other sciences in real life, most notably psychology. Also, at this point, you can see the age when this book was first published. It was still a worth read, although it was not as mind-blowing or eye-opening as I'd expected it to be.

Well, that's on me, but I'd recommend it as a to-read if you're to make first steps into the "NLP".

Introducing Nero-Linguistic Programming

My trouble with NLP is that I feel it's something I call "popular psychology", it's a fancy name for something that is actually a cross-science collection of human behavior and language.

Overall, book isn't bad, but its age is showing and in that way it's similar to The Uses of Enchantment: I'd recommend this book mostly to those who are new to NLP, to start with something light, and already at that point decide if that's the topic they want to research further on.

At this point, I'd instead recommend another great book on human behavior and thinking - Thinking, Fast and Slow which is IMO better written, has more insight and doesn't sell any "training" or workshops. Oct 02, Esculapio Poblete rated it liked it Shelves: It's an introductory book, but it let you pry inside the NLP entrails. After reading the book you'll get not just a cursory knowledge about NLP but it can awake you about some aspects that maybe you have not think through before.

Have you learned to learn? It's the right way to do it how we have been doing at school, or there are better ways to do it? What is the difference between doing something and excelling at it? Can you do something really well and explain how you did it? And very important It's an introductory book, but it let you pry inside the NLP entrails. And very important also is the way we think, in general. Are you a visual thinker, or you think through words?

How do you filter the inputs you receive through your senses? You know that our brain is lazy and it prefers discharging decisions in an unconscious level, but without the intervention of our conscious reasoning, without comparing expectations versus results, it's impossible to calibrate ourselves, to learn in other words. This book is about language and communication.

There is a lot of analysis of how we talk, both to others and to ourselves in our own thoughts. This book has helped me realize how much misunderstanding and ambiguity there can be in everyday conversations, and that a lot of times if people don't completely understand something you say, they'll just guess the meaning rather than asking you for clarification.

There are a ton of exercises you can try out with friends. If you want to get the most value This book is about language and communication. Nov 11, Emmynotahotmail.

Good introduction on the Subject of Neuro-Linguistic Programming. It is the practice of using language and imagery to improve emotional responses to challenging situation in life, and to improve the enjoyment of life in general.

The theory also has applications on communication and teamwork as it allows to tap into the languages of other people, whether they respond more to visual, auditory or sensory language. Sensitivity to others' modes of communication allows us to "pace" our communication p Good introduction on the Subject of Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Sensitivity to others' modes of communication allows us to "pace" our communication partners and build better rapport with them in the interest of better team work.

Apr 11, James Johnson rated it really liked it. This book was my first introduction to Neuro Linguistic Programming. It was insightful, but very dry. I could only stomach pages at a time, but the information was good enough to get me through the book. It is an introduction, as the title says, so it gave me an idea of what NLP is and direction for further study, but not a lot of practical takes-aways. Some really interesting stuff in here.

Even if it doesn't there are still some very good thoughts and ideas about psychology in general that will definitely help me with my day to day communication in work and personal relationships. Sep 17, Andie rated it liked it. I read most of it but didn't do the exercises.

I can see how NLP helps people but I found this book quite boring, and for most concepts explained, I don't see an advantage to knowing the technical terminologies. Oct 27, Patrick McConnell rated it liked it Shelves: NLP is relatively useless you already have fairly advanced control of your mental and behavioral functions.
